Sport

Sport and Physical Education are an integral part of the school’s Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Student involvement is high because the community values participation in both recreational and competitive sport. Students of all ages and ability levels are catered for through school and district programs. There is an emphasis on participation, skills training and sportsmanship at all times.

For the young students in Kindergarten and Years 1 and 2, sport and games skills are taught in class time as part of the curriculum. However, Year 2 students all participate in a two week swimming program during the year.

All students are allocated to a “House” when they enrol at the school. The Houses are Bass, Cook, Flinders and Phillip. Each House has a boy and girl House Captain and House Vice Captain. Students can earn points for their House in a multitude of ways as well as through participation in sports. In Years 3 to 6 a House Competition runs throughout the year.

Sport in the Years 3-6 differs from sport in the Kindergarten to Year 2 section of the school in the following ways:

"AUSSIE SPORTS"

At Curl Curl North, we do not take part in inter-school competitions during Terms 1 and 4 as the students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of “recreational sports”. At various times over the years this has included “Nippers” (surf education), tennis, AFL skills and games, basketball, indoor rock climbing, beach volleyball, softball, Taekwondo, Capoeira, fencing, touch football, lawn bowls and games at school. There are usually about eight different sports on offer each term. “Aussie Sport” is not competitive and does not involve team selection. Students choose their sport at the beginning of the term.

It is important to note that those attending “Nippers” which takes place at North Curl Curl Beach, must be able to swim. There is a cost involved for some of the “Aussie Sports” on offer while there are always a number with no cost involved. Costs vary but are usually between $20 and $70 depending on equipment and outside tuition. Notes go home with detailed information before the students choose. Choices are made at the beginning of Term 1 and again at the end of Term 3 ready for Term 4.

PSSA SPORT

Curl Curl North is a member of the Manly Zone Primary School Sports Association (PSSA). In Terms 2 & 3 students participate in an inter-school competition run by the Manly Zone PSSA. Sports on offer are boys' and girls' soccer, netball and rugby league. There are junior (ages 8,9 & 10) and senior (ages 11, 12 & 13) teams. While teams are selected, we aim for maximum participation. Year 3 do not usually participate unless they are needed as reserves so those who do not take part in the competition do school based sports and games.

During Terms 3 & 4, Friday lunch in the primary is early at midday as some teams have to travel. Junior games begin at 1pm and seniors around 1:45pm.

In the senior years children can have the opportunity to represent the Manly Zone, the Metropolitan North Region or even the state in any sport they excel at.

More information about the NSW PSSA can be found on their website.

PSSA CARNIVALS

School carnivals are held in swimming (Term 1), cross country (late Term 1 or early Term 2) and athletics (Terms 2 and 3). Children who gain a first or second place (or 3rd place in age races only) will then go on to represent the school at the Manly Zone Carnival. If successful they may then go on to Regional or even State level. All children are encouraged to participate in the school carnivals and support their House.

Encourage your child to go along, participate and have fun!

OTHER SPORTS

In Term 2 some students have the opportunity to represent the school at the knockout day for rugby league, netball and boys soccer and there are sometimes opportunities to participate in other competitions. Students occasionally receive some free coaching from experts in school time.

Students who excel in sports not offered at school can have the opportunity to represent at a higher level through the state PSSA. Please refer to the DET sport website link above for more details.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Although all sports are run and supervised by teachers, we welcome and need parental involvement. Parents are invited to all carnivals.
