Curl Curl North – A Leader in Interactive Technology

Interactive Whiteboards

Curl Curl North has a reputation as being innovators in their use of technology and in particular their use of interactive whiteboards to improve the learning outcomes of all students.

Curl Curl North was introduced to SMART™ interactive whiteboards in 2005 by Helen Lacey who is now the National Educational Manager of Electroboard. Helen led Curl Curl North into the exciting world of SMART™ interactive whiteboards. With the help of an active P & C the school set about to put a SMART™ interactive whiteboard into every classroom. This vision has been enthusiastically adopted by the teachers and has led to the strong collegial environment which supports staff in the pursuit of innovative teaching practice using technology.

The teaching staff of Curl Curl North regularly attend in-house training sessions as well as SMART™ user group sessions. Curl Curl North has been recognised as a leader in the use of SMART™ interactive whiteboards and has hosted several training sessions which are attended by around 200 classroom teachers from the Northern Sydney region.

Staff training sessions which are known as the ‘White and Red Club’ have been shared and adopted by numerous schools and regions throughout NSW. In addition, the innovative practices of Curl Curl North have been shared with Senior Educational Directors from the NSW Department of Education & Training, overseas educators as well as senior educators who are responsible for the implementation of teaching practices enabled by interactive whiteboards. Staff regularly present and share their practice at various conferences throughout Sydney.

A critical success factor for SMART™ Interactive Whiteboards is the collaboration between teachers - creating a culture of sharing practices, enabling teachers to look into other classrooms, share SMART™ notebooks, add to and innovate in the delivery of classroom lessons.

Curl Curl North has developed a close working relationship with Electroboard. Electroboard’s website features classroom examples and notebooks created by teachers at Curl Curl North as well as interviews and photographs of students participating in lessons using SMART™ interactive whiteboards.

Connected Classrooms

The Connected Classrooms Program is a NSW State Government initiative to provide Department of Education and Training (DET) staff and students with new opportunities to connect with each other across enhanced technology facilities for sharing resources and data collaboration.

Curl Curl North was one of the first schools on the Northern Beaches to become a Connected Classroom school. Video Conferencing facilities were installed in Term 4 2008. Since then students have participated in a range of ‘virtual excursions’, most notably to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. In addition, teachers have participated in a range of Professional Learning workshops with colleagues from across New South Wales.
