The Green Team – Promoting environmental sustainability at Curl Curl North

Curl Curl North has a strong reputation as an environmentally aware school with strong environmental education programs. During 2008 the school formed a Green Team made up of parents, teachers and community members. In addition to this an enthusiastic student environmental team called the Teenie Weenie Greenies was also established.

In 2008 the Green Team held two very successful weekend working bees. These resulted in the development and planting of a student ecogarden and a worm farm. In addition, existing gardens were pruned, weeded and maintained and two water tanks were installed.

This year a Master Plan has been developed with input from students, teachers and parents. This will enable us to plan and construct environmentally sustainable playground improvements over the next ten years.

Links to Key Learning Areas and the use of other resources

Integral to the School Plans and its targets are environmental links and excursions within the local area. The cross-curriculum approach taken to K-6 environmental education and the further development of sustainability at Curl Curl North, allows students, teachers and parents the opportunity to work together establishing partnerships with Warringah Council, The Coastal Environment Centre, Kimbriki Waste and Recycling Centre, Curl Curl Lagoon Management Team, Manly Dam and Taronga Zoo.

The high level of engagement from the students involved in these excursions and learning experiences, demonstrates the building of understanding, transfer of knowledge and increased commitment to managing our local environment and our impact on it.
